Once one of the jewels of the Crescent, now the dark powers have turned their gaze upon it, and Baleron Grothgar, son of the king, has become inextricably drawn into the machinations of the Dark Lord, along with his beloved Rolenya, elf maiden and High Priestess of Illiana. Their love is forbidden, and it will be tested as the armies of the enemy strive against the free kingdoms of the north. Worse, one of their own, Raugst, is in truth an agent of the Dark Lord, and Raugst will soon bend the realm to his will. If Havensrike falls, so too will the rest of the Crescent, and the Dark Lord will be unleashed upon the world. Only Baleron and Rolenya can stop him, but how can they when the legendary Moonstone, the great artifact of the Light that has kept the fell powers at bay for thousands of years, has been taken? Lord of the Black Land (known as Assassin of the Black Land in the version) is the fourth volume of a dark epic fantasy series by New York Times bestselling author Jack Conner. If you like action-packed storytelling with the darkness of George R. R. Martin and the epic sweep of J. R. R. Tolkien, then you’ll love Jack Conner’s incredible mix of epic fantasy, adventure, romance and war. This volume is a perfect entry point in the series.

I really enjoyed this book. I have already read the Atomic Sea series which was also excellent. It was for that reason that I thought I would try the fantasy series. I do notice a trend in the writing in that he pushes his characters and the storyline to the brink; that is, as I read and the story develops, I find myself saying, "Well, they are totally and throughly screwed and there is no getting out of this one." This is good in that it is compelling not so much as to see what happens next but just to see how bad of train-wreck this is going to get for the characters. It's like the worse the accident on the highway the more the opposing traffic rubbernecks to see it. Don't take this the wrong way, it is an interesting way to write a story and one in which is not employed all that often. Most of the time in fiction, especially fantasy/sci-fi, the reader knows the story is going to end okay and everyone that started the adventure will likely finish it intact. With these books, I don't come away with that feeling and at the conclusion of this one I wouldn't be surprised if it ended with the main characters all dead and the bad guy sitting on high victorious.

I look forward to reading book 2!

Lord of the Black Land Jack Conner 9781537620992 Books Reviews

Conner has written a VERY dark fantasy in, THE WAR OF THE MOONSTONE. I stress this as it is an important factor in whether you will enjoy this novel or not. Rest assured, this novel is very well written and immaculately edited, but it is so violent it distracted me in the end- to the point I felt the need to rob the story of the final, fifth star.

SPOILERS

An all powerful and evil demon, Gilgaroth, is determined to rule the world and hold reign over the lands of men and elf. He has enlisted his son and most trusted servant, Vrulug, who in turn orders his soldier, Raugst, the wolf-man, to carry out Gilgaroth's plans.
Lord Giorn of Thiersgald, with the help of the high priestess, Niara, will do anything to stop this evil incursion.

END SPOILER

Positives- As stated, this is a beautifully written novel with professional quality editing. There is a wonderful EPIC quality to the story, which begs a sequel, as so much distance was hinted at, so many realms and good descriptives to make this world seem very real.
The dialogue was crisp and believable, the emotions were valid. Excellent job.

Negatives- This is a matter of taste, I suppose, and not to take away from the quality of the storytelling... however! This was the darkest, the most twisted and violent fantasy story I have EVER read. The scenes of slaughter, rape, decapitation and foul, rotting (sometimes) undead bodies came one on top of the other with very little room between scenes for the reader to catch her breath! I'm no baby and I'm not afraid of bloodshed, especially in a war story, but there was such constant carnage, I found myself (at times) just wanting to put the book down in horror and disgust!
In fact, I think this tale should be categorized as fantasy horror... that way, the potential buyer will know just exactly what he is getting into.
That being said, hats off to a fine writer! 4 stars!
I was excited when I realized this book is a continuation of Jack Conner's, black tower trilogy a really well written trilogy. however it is a stand alone book. you in no way have to read the trilogy first. [But the trilogy is worth the read! ) ] this story is the prequel ( the beginning, before the black tower trilogy) ***lol...I read them out of sequence , which just goes to show you how much they are their own identities. ) Anyway, this story hints at an evil Lord of hell called, Golgareth. we don't get to meet him, only his lieutenants. he has been planning for centuries the demise of the human world. he hates with a fire that should wipe away the human world but since just hating us won't make us go away, he sends his evilest of creatures to war against the humans. while his armies prepare , he sends Raugert to infiltrate the city that t contains the emphamis moonstone; the symbol and energy of light and grace. The priest's gain and re-energize their own light as well as their individual stones. it is the pillar of the people. and Golgareth wants it! Will he get t it? this story is full of hate, deceit, death, love, and hope. at the end of the book the priestess Naria does a very surprising and cunning action trying to save her people but will it work and at what cost to her and her secret, illegal lover, prince Giorn. these 3 are the main characters of the story. the book is well written and edited. Which is sooo..nice!! it's close to 500 pages in length which the author utilized to create the environment, the characters and their interactions to their fullest. I personally love a book this size or larger. you can "almost" be assured of an entertaining read with that amount of pages and this book accomplishes just that! I'm definitely moving on to the next moonstone book.I want to see what happens to the two lovers; do they survive, can they overcome?
since I've already read "the blacktower's" trilogy, I'm just going to put in a plug and tell you it's a really good trilogy (available in omnibus, now). From this book thru the trilogy, the books become more graphic and violent, not violent like "the 300" but war and torture and some sex scenes. so this is definitely an adult and perhaps older teens series.
This was a really good book, with great pacing, that kept my attention throughout. I really liked the concept and idea. Jack has piqued my interest and I will have to read the conclusion in the next book. I did find some of the conflicts seemed to resolve to quickly/easily which was somewhat disappointing. I never really felt like I have a full connection with the characters which could use a little more development. I also found to much telling vs showing. Cleaning up the passive voice could help with this.

All in all, I had the above issues but they never stopped me from reading. I had to continue and the cliffhanger was enough to encourage me to get the next book.
